Products – Fields & Structured Content
Fields let you describe products and content through structured information, rather than placing every detail inside a description.
For example, a property can have separate fields for floor area, number of bedrooms, and location. A software product can have technical requirements, while a directory entry can include contact details and a map.
MirandaPlace provides two main field systems:
System | Purpose |
|---|---|
Specific fields | Predefined technical fields supplied by MirandaPlace for supported sectors. |
Additional fields | Fields you create and organize to suit your project. |
Both can support product information and structured content. Their frontend presentation depends on the applicable layout.
Field Definitions and Item Values
A field definition describes the information to collect, such as its name and input type.
The value belongs to the individual product or content item.
For example, a field called Opening hours can be reused across several entries, while each entry stores its own hours.
Fields and Product Options
Descriptive fields are separate from purchasable options.
Use fields for specifications and information. Use attributes and variants when customers must choose a purchasable combination with its own price, SKU, or stock.
See Products – Prices, Options & Stock for variant configuration.
Specific fields are predefined technical sets supplied by MirandaPlace.
Their definitions are maintained by the component. You enter the values relevant to each product rather than redesigning the predefined fields.
To inspect the available definitions, open the corresponding section under the MirandaPlace Fields menu.
Choosing a Sector
In the product editor, open the specific-fields section, select the appropriate sector, and use Load to display its fields.
The available sectors depend on the product type and editing context. Examples include:
- Automotive;
- Clothing;
- Real Estate;
- Electronics;
- Documents and Software for Digital Download products;
- Events and Services for Service products.
The sector organizes descriptive information. It does not change the product’s commercial type or category mode.
Entering Values
Complete the fields that apply to the item.
Use consistent units and terminology across related products so visitors can understand and compare the information.
Save the product after editing its field values.
Changing or Resetting the Sector
Changing the sector changes the set of technical fields you work with.
Review any confirmation before resetting or replacing a selection, and check the resulting values before saving.
When to Create Additional Fields
Use additional fields when the information you need is not covered by the predefined sector.
You can combine a suitable predefined set with your own project-specific fields.
Additional fields are created and maintained by you.
Open the additional-fields management page under the MirandaPlace Fields menu and select New.
Creating a Field
Configure:
- Title — the readable field name.
- Field key — its internal identifier.
- Field type — the kind of input or content.
- Group — an optional organizational group.
- Options — where required by the selected type.
- Required, publication status, and ordering as appropriate.
Save the field, then open a product or content item to enter its value in the additional-fields section.
Field Key
The field key identifies the field independently of its displayed title.
Choose it carefully when creating the field. For existing fields, the editor protects the key from modification.
Changing a field’s title does not require changing its key.
Available Field Types
Type | Suitable use |
|---|---|
Text | Short names, references, or descriptions |
Number | Numeric information |
Select | One choice from predefined options |
Checkbox | A single checked or unchecked option |
Multiple checkboxes | Several choices from predefined options |
Textarea | Longer plain text |
Editor | Formatted content using the configured Joomla editor |
Date | A date value |
URL | A website or resource address |
An email address | |
Telephone | A telephone number |
Media image | An image selected through Joomla’s Media Manager |
Media file | A file selected through Joomla’s Media Manager |
Map embed | A supported embedded map |
Separator | A visual division between fields |
Choice Options
For Select and Multiple checkboxes fields, enter the available options one per line.
Use a controlled list when consistent wording matters, such as condition, material, or service area.
Formatted Content
Editor fields use the Joomla editor configured for the site. HTML is filtered when saved, so not every pasted element or script is retained.
Maps
Map embed fields support permitted map embeds, such as supported Google Maps and OpenStreetMap URLs.
They are intended for maps, rather than arbitrary embedded HTML or scripts.
Media Files and Protected Downloads
A Media file field provides a descriptive file link. It does not create the protected delivery conditions of a purchased Digital Download product.
Use the dedicated digital product configuration for files that require purchase-based download authorization.
Separators
A Separator creates visual structure without storing an individual product value.
Available presentation options include text, a line, a combination of text and line, or spacing.
Field groups organize related additional fields into manageable sections.
For example:
- Contact details — telephone, email, website;
- Visitor information — opening hours, accessibility, directions;
- Technical details — project-specific specifications.
Creating and Assigning Groups
Create the group in the field-group management page under Fields.
Then edit each additional field and select the appropriate group.
Fields can also remain ungrouped.
Ordering
Use group and field ordering to establish a useful sequence in the editor and in frontend presentations that follow the configured field order.
A custom layout can place selected fields in its own arrangement.
Shared Structure
Groups organize field definitions; they do not create categories or change an item’s operating mode.
Each product or content item still has its own field values.
Saving a field value makes the information available to MirandaPlace. Its position and visibility depend on the presentation used for the item.
Product Detail Layouts
Use the Product Layout Builder to place supported fields in the detail page.
For example, a layout can place:
- a short introduction near the main image;
- technical information in a dedicated section;
- contact details beside a map;
- additional descriptive content further down the page.
The category determines which detail layout applies, including any inherited configuration.
Specific Fields in the Builder
The builder’s specific-field sector determines which sector fields are available in its palette.
Choose a sector that matches the information entered for the items using that layout.
Changing the builder’s sector changes the specific-field elements in the layout; it does not populate or rewrite the values stored in products.
Card Chips
Category Card Chips can display selected specific-field values directly on listing cards.
The category selects the fields and their order. Each card reads the values from its own product or content item.
Card Chips do not automatically display every additional field.
See Categories → Card Chips for configuration.
Checking the Result
After configuring fields and layouts, check an actual frontend item.
If expected information is missing, review:
- whether the field is published;
- whether the item contains a value;
- whether the correct layout applies;
- whether the layout includes the relevant field or field section.
Content (CCK) mode uses MirandaPlace to organize information without presenting the item as an online purchase.
Examples include:
- directories of places;
- property information;
- portfolios;
- technical records;
- local guides;
- informational service directories.
Creating a Content Entry
- Create or select a category operating in Content (CCK) mode.
- Create a new item from the Products list.
- Enter its title and select the CCK category.
- Add descriptions, images, and supporting media.
- Complete the relevant specific and additional fields.
- Apply an appropriate presentation layout through the category settings.
- Save and publish the item when ready.
CCK is a category mode, not a separate commercial product type.
Example: A Directory of Places
A place entry could contain:
Information | Suggested field |
|---|---|
Name | Item title |
Introduction | Description |
Opening hours | Text or Textarea |
Website | URL |
Contact number | Telephone |
Facilities | Multiple checkboxes |
Location | Map embed |
Photographs | Item image gallery |
Create the definitions once, then enter different values for each place.
CCK and Commercial Data
In a CCK category, commercial and shipping-related elements are inactive in the frontend presentation.
Moving an existing product into a CCK category preserves its stored commercial data. Returning it to an appropriate mode can make those capabilities available again.
Combining Content and Commerce
The same website can contain CCK directories, Catalog showcases, and Ecommerce products.
Use category modes to define their behaviour, fields to structure their information, and layouts to present it consistently.
