Products – Digital Downloads & Access

MirandaPlace provides two ways to deliver downloadable resources:

  • Digital Download — customers purchase the files associated with a product.
  • Access — customers purchase a plan that grants access to one or more download collections.

Both require a customer account and use protected file delivery.

Supported where required

Use Digital Download for a specific document or software package. Use Access for a resource library or a plan covering several collections.

Before You Begin
Configure the unified Private Storage in Store Config and check that its status is ready.

Create the product in an Ecommerce category when it should be purchasable online.

Guest checkout is unavailable when the cart contains a Digital Download or Access product. Physical products in a mixed cart retain their shipping requirements.

Digital Download Products

Creating the Product

  1. Create or edit a product.
  2. Select Digital Download as its product type.
  3. Complete its title, category, price, descriptions, and images.
  4. Add or associate the downloadable files.
  5. Configure download limits, expiry, and customer instructions.
  6. Configure licensing only if required.
  7. Save the product and review its configuration before publishing.

Files already present in the available file repository must be explicitly associated with the product. Uploading files through the product form associates them when the form is saved.

Download Limit
The download limit applies separately to each purchased file, for the relevant order and product.

  • 0 means unlimited downloads.
  • A positive value sets the maximum number of download attempts.

For example, a limit of 3 on a product containing two files allows up to three downloads of each file.

A download attempt is recorded before the transfer completes. An interrupted or failed transfer can therefore consume an attempt.

Download Expiry
The expiry setting defines how long the purchased files remain available.

  • 0 means no download expiry.
  • A positive number defines the permitted number of days.

The period begins when the order first reaches an eligible paid status, rather than when the customer first downloads a file.

What the Customer Sees
Purchased files are available through the order in the customer account when the order and download conditions permit access.

The account can show:

  • downloads already used;
  • the configured limit and remaining allowance;
  • the expiry date;
  • whether access is blocked because the limit or expiry has been reached.

The purchased file can remain visible in the order history even when its download action is no longer available.

Changing Product Files or Conditions
Existing purchases retain the files and download conditions recorded for their orders.

Adding a file or changing the product’s download limit does not automatically apply that change to previous purchases.

Use Access collections when your intended offer is an evolving library of resources.

Download Collections

A download collection groups files that can be included in one or more Access plans.

Create and manage collections through the Download Collections administration page.

Preparing a Collection

  1. Enter the collection’s title and descriptive information.
  2. Add an optional collection image.
  3. Upload or associate its files.
  4. Review file titles, versions, and publication settings.
  5. Save and publish the collection when ready.

The collection editor supports uploading multiple ZIP or PDF files through file selection or drag and drop.

Server upload limits still apply.

For supported Joomla ZIP packages, MirandaPlace can read the package manifest to suggest a version and a readable title. Review the resulting metadata before publication.

Collection Image
The collection image is a public presentation asset. It is separate from the protected files delivered to customers.

Collections and Access Plans
A plan can include one or several collections. Several plans can also offer access to the same collection set.

For example:

  • a Templates collection;
  • an Extensions collection;
  • a plan covering Templates only;
  • another plan covering both collections.

Adding or Updating Resources
Files within an included collection can evolve over time.

Customers with active access to that collection can access its eligible published resources, including later additions.

This differs from direct Digital Download purchases, which retain their purchased file references.

Public Visibility
Publishing a collection makes it available to the relevant frontend presentation. It does not make its protected files freely downloadable.

Download permission is checked separately for the current customer.

Access Plans

An Access product defines the commercial conditions for access to a set of download collections.

Creating an Access Product

  1. Create or edit a product.
  2. Select Access as its product type.
  3. Select the collections included in the plan.
  4. Configure the access duration and renewal behaviour.
  5. Configure any applicable licensing allowance.
  6. Complete the price and product presentation.
  7. Save and publish it in an Ecommerce category.

Access purchases require a customer account and use a quantity of one.

Access Duration
A plan can grant time-limited access or access without expiry, according to its duration setting.

The customer’s download permission depends on an active entitlement covering the requested collection.

Purchased Collection Coverage
The collections included in the purchase are recorded with the order.

Changing the collections associated with the product affects subsequent purchases. It does not rewrite the collection coverage already purchased by existing customers.

The files published inside those included collections can still change over time.

Alternative Plan Groups
Use an optional plan group when different Access products should be treated as alternative choices in the cart.

Adding a different Access product from the same group replaces the previous plan from that group.

An empty group, or a different group, does not trigger this replacement.

Plan groups control cart selection only. They do not determine collection coverage, renewal eligibility, or upgrade credit.

Renewals & Upgrades

MirandaPlace evaluates existing access when a customer purchases another plan covering the same exact set of collections.

Plans with different collection sets are treated as different coverage, even if they share a similar name or belong to the same cart plan group.

Renewal Behaviour
The plan’s renewal setting determines how a new period is calculated:

Setting

Behaviour

Extend

Adds the new period after the latest active expiry when that expiry is still in the future.

Restart

Starts a new validity period from the new activation.

When the previous access has expired, the new period starts from the new activation.

The customer-facing purchase summary explains the resulting operation and validity.

Licence Allowance on Renewal
For the same collection coverage, licence allowances are not simply added together.

The resulting allowance preserves the higher applicable entitlement. An unlimited allowance takes precedence over a limited one.

Upgrading a Plan
Eligible upgrades allow a customer to move to a higher plan covering the same collection set.

MirandaPlace calculates credit for eligible unused coverage from the amount historically paid, rather than from the product’s current catalog price.

The cart displays this credit separately.

The upgraded plan starts a new period with the full duration configured for the new plan.

Downgrades and Permanent Access
Unused-period upgrade credit does not apply to downgrades or to plans with different collection coverage.

A lower plan cannot replace an active higher entitlement through a downgrade purchase. It becomes purchasable after the higher entitlement expires.

Repurchasing the same coverage is blocked when the customer already has access without expiry.

Licences & Joomla Updates

Licensing is optional. Selling downloadable files does not automatically require issuing licence keys.

Enable licensing only when it is part of the product or plan you offer.

Automatic and Customer-Generated Licences
Where configured, MirandaPlace generates licences after the purchase becomes eligible.

You can also permit customers to generate additional keys within the purchased allowance.

The allowance has different meanings:

  • for Digital Download, it controls additional customer-generated keys;
  • for Access, the plan’s total allowance includes the initial key.

Each licence key currently supports one site. A plan allowing several sites does so through several keys, rather than one key bound to several sites.

A licence key does not automatically add copy protection to arbitrary software or documents.

Purchased Licensing Conditions
Current orders record the applicable licensing conditions at purchase.

Changing the product’s licensing configuration does not automatically replace the conditions recorded for those purchases.

Optional Joomla Update Delivery
For supported Joomla ZIP packages, MirandaPlace can provide update feeds when update delivery is enabled for the file.

This requires the extension package to declare the appropriate Joomla update server. Enabling the file option does not rewrite the manifest inside the ZIP.

Protected update downloads check the licence, site, and applicable product rights.

This feature is intended for extension distributors. Ordinary downloadable documents do not require it.

Customer Access & Ongoing Management

Direct Purchases
Customers access directly purchased files through their orders in the customer account.

Download availability follows the order status, purchased files, download limits, and expiry.

Access Collections
Create a Joomla menu item for MirandaPlace’s Download Area to provide frontend navigation to published collections.

Customers can open a collection to inspect its files. Download actions depend on their active access rights.

The customer account also provides access to purchased collections through its Access section.

Pricing Destination
Configure the Pricing menu destination in:

Store Config → Customer Experience → Access Products

Customers without the required entitlement can be directed there to choose an appropriate plan.

The Pricing page is the destination you configure; it is not automatically created by publishing an Access product.

Quick Access Purchase
The Quick Access Purchase menu-item type provides a shorter purchase route for a selected Access product.

It adds the product through the normal cart flow and redirects to checkout. Other items already in the cart are preserved.

Payments and Activation
Download rights, licences, and Access entitlements depend on an eligible payment state. Merely creating an order does not grant the same rights as a paid purchase.

If payment succeeds but entitlement generation encounters an error, review the order’s activation status and the available administrative recovery actions before asking the customer to purchase again.

Cancellations and Refunds
An order moving to a cancelled or refunded state can lose its download rights, while its licences and Access entitlements are suspended.

A partial refund should not be treated as automatically revoking every right associated with the order.

Maintaining Files
Manage files through MirandaPlace’s administration controls.

Do not manually overwrite or remove files from private storage: existing orders, products, or collections may still reference them.

Back up private storage together with the database so purchased resources and their associated records can be restored consistently.

Check Before Publishing
Verify the intended customer journey:

  1. Confirm private storage is ready.
  2. Check the files and collections associated with the offer.
  3. Review limits, duration, renewal behaviour, and licensing.
  4. Check the product’s price and Ecommerce category.
  5. Verify access through an eligible customer account.
  6. Check the expired or unauthorized state.
  7. For Access plans, review the renewal or upgrade summary with an existing customer entitlement.
