Fields & Field Groups

Fields & Field Groups lets you define additional information for products and structured content.

Create reusable fields, organize them into groups, and place their values in your frontend layouts.

To access these sections, go to:

Components → MirandaPlace → Fields → Additional Fields

Components → MirandaPlace → Fields → Additional Field Groups

These additional fields are managed within MirandaPlace. They are separate from Joomla’s article fields and MirandaPlace’s predefined sector-specific fields.

Fields, Groups & Product Values

Three elements work together:

Element

Purpose

Field definition

Defines the information to collect and the input type.

Field group

Organizes related field definitions.

Product value

Stores the information entered for an individual product or content item.

For example, a group named Additional Specifications might contain fields for material, care instructions, and a reference document.

Each product can store its own values for those fields.

Additional & Predefined Fields
Additional fields are created by the merchant.

Predefined sector-specific fields belong to MirandaPlace’s supplied content structures and are managed separately.

Use additional fields when the information you need is not already covered by an appropriate existing field.

Frontend Presentation
Creating a field does not place it automatically in every custom product layout.

Use the Product Layout Builder to select the additional fields that should appear and arrange their presentation.

Creating Field Groups

Create a group to organize fields that belong together.

A group provides:

  • Title — its descriptive name.
  • Status — Published or Unpublished.
  • Ordering — its position in the applicable administration lists.

Save the group before assigning fields to it.

Assigning Fields
Select the group in each field’s configuration.

A field has one group assignment. Several fields can share the same group.

Use clear group names, such as Technical Information, Visitor Information, or Additional Documents.

Groups & Layouts
Groups help organize the editing interface and the builder’s field palette.

They do not define the frontend page’s columns, tabs, or accordions. Configure those structures in the Product Layout Builder.

Creating Fields & Choosing Types

Each field provides the following main settings:

  • Title — the readable field label.
  • Field key — its unique technical identifier.
  • Field type — the input and presentation type.
  • Group — its organizational group.
  • Required — marks the input as required in the applicable editing form.
  • Status — Published or Unpublished.
  • Ordering — its position in the applicable field ordering.

Field Key
Use a unique identifier containing letters, numbers, and underscores, such as:

care_instructions

The field key cannot be changed after creation. This preserves the references connecting the definition to existing values.

The title can provide a more readable label without changing that identifier.

Available Types

Type

Intended information

Text

A short text value.

Number

A numeric value.

Select

One choice from predefined options.

Checkbox

A single checkbox value.

Multiple checkboxes

Several choices from predefined options.

Textarea

Longer plain text.

Editor

Formatted content using the configured Joomla editor.

Map embed

A supported embedded map.

Date

A date value.

URL

A web address.

Email

An email address.

Telephone

A telephone number.

Media image

An image selected through Joomla’s Media Manager.

Media file

A file selected through Joomla’s Media Manager.

Separator

A visual heading, divider, or spacing element.

Choose the type according to the information being entered.

Changing the type of an existing field can change how its saved values are interpreted and displayed. Review affected products and layouts after such a change.

Options, Media, Maps & Separators

Select & Multiple-Choice Options
For Select and Multiple checkboxes, enter one option per line.

For example:

Cotton
Linen
Wool

Select allows one choice. Multiple checkboxes allows several choices.

Review existing product values when removing or changing options that have already been used.

Formatted Text
The Editor type uses the configured Joomla editor.

Saved content is filtered; the field is not an unrestricted HTML or script container.

Use Textarea when plain text is sufficient.

Map Embeds
The Map embed type supports the accepted Google Maps and OpenStreetMap embed formats.

Paste the supported map embed into the field.

This type handles supported map sources rather than allowing arbitrary embedded content.

Images & Files
Media image and Media file use Joomla’s Media Manager to select a resource.

The selected path is stored as the product’s field value.

A Media file field is intended for presenting a linked resource. For purchased files requiring payment checks, expiry, or download limits, use MirandaPlace’s protected download functionality.

See Products → Digital Downloads & Access.

Separators
Separators organize information visually without storing a product value.

Their available presentation options include:

  • text;
  • text with a line;
  • line only;
  • spacing.

Use the separator controls to configure the applicable alignment, line appearance, spacing, and color.

Using Fields & Maintaining the Structure

Entering Product Values
Open a product or content item and complete its available additional fields.

Saving the item stores its values separately from the field definitions.

The same definition can therefore hold different information for different products.

See Products → Fields & Structured Content for the editing workflow.

Placing Fields in a Layout
Open the relevant Product Layout Builder layout.

Locate the fields in the Extra fields palette and drag the required elements into the intended rows and columns.

Save the layout and check a product that uses it.

The field must contain suitable information and be available to the renderer for its expected output to appear.

Field Ordering & Layout Ordering
Field ordering helps organize the available fields.

A custom frontend layout has its own element order, determined by their positions in the builder.

Reordering a field definition does not rearrange a layout you have already composed.

Maintaining Existing Fields
Keep field keys stable and use title changes for ordinary label updates.

Before deleting a field or reorganizing its group, review the products and layouts that depend on it.

Removing an element from a layout changes presentation without deleting the product’s stored value.

Checking the Result
Verify the complete workflow with a representative product:

  • create a group and field;
  • enter and save a value;
  • reopen the product to check the saved information;
  • place the field in a custom layout;
  • verify its frontend presentation;
  • check required inputs and choice options;
  • test linked files or maps where applicable.
